Week 12 - Wrap Up, Catch Up etc

This was fun - bit annoying when some things don't work due to IT constraints imposed by overly rigorous IT departments but overall very beneficial. Already using about half of this but looking to do a whole lot more.

Week 11 - Online Applications etc

We are already using a number of these applications. Google Docs is great for collaboratively working on projects, policies etc. We have used it for PLEG reviews, creating an "Online Engagement Strategy" and a few other things. Looking at using it as our default Word processing facility on Public access PC's.

Sometimes applications like this and Zoho are much better than very expensive Microsoft products because they are simpler to use and FREE but will also interact with the major proprietary software.

Week 10 - Mashups

Mashups became Mess-Ups due to technical difficulties.

This would be a great tool for publicity, calendars and a thousand other things. Unfortunately Big Huge Labs (what a very rude name for a website - don't Google it) was misbehaving.
Love Google maps and we have incorporated it into our website. Also looking at using a similar calendar facility for our mobile library timetable.

Finally got it working!!!

Week 9 - Podcasts etc

There's some great stuff here - good for local studies etc.
Found a highlight - the last 10 minutes of ABC's radio broadcast of the 1966 VFL grand final.
Mind you - there's heaps of boring crap as well - lots of people who just lioke to hear themselves talk.
Finding the time to listen to everything so you can properly evaluate it would be an impossibility.

Delicious - but not always palatable for librarians!!

The great thing about Delicious and similar sites is that people can find stuff by using common everyday language.
Whilst subject headings and authorities provide a wonderful retrieval structure for librarians to work in, the simple fact is that "normal" people don't think like librarians. Subject headings and authorities are often a barrier to information retrieval for the "great unwashed".

Wiki Review

Wikis are a great way to share information and involve other people, whether they be work colleagues, or just people with a common interest in virtual dialogue.

Wikis can vary enormously in quality and authority. They can be hi-jacked by people with their own agendas - so be careful.

Wikis have many useful applications for public libraries but it's a good idea to have a moderator to oversee the content. Our library Wiki:

Fraser Gehrig could be the most contradictory figure to have ever played football. He is privately garrulous but publicly reserved. He could be totally hot one week, the folowing week he could appear disinterested.
Gehrig became a powerful and dominant force in the goalsquare and weighed in at 109 kilograms. He became a prolific goalkicker, booting 55 goals in 2003 and 103 in 2004. A large pitch invasion by fans occurred following his 100th goal. Gehrig won back-to-back Coleman Medals in 2004 and 2005 and was named at full-forward in the All-Australian team in 2004.

Gehrig's unique style of play earned him the nicknames "G-Train" for his locomotive-like leads and strong marking and "Carpet Snake" for his tendency to 'hide' behind the goal posts only to appear when the ball was heading his way. He has twice kicked 10 goals in a match in his AFL career; once against Richmond and once against the Kangaroos[2].

Now that Fraser has finally hung up his boots what should he be doing???
